Elizabeth (Bette) Abramenko
Elizabeth (Bette) Abramenko, a lifelong resident of Fort Macleod passed away peacefully on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the age of 91 after a brief illness.
Bette was born in Fort Macleod, the fifth of 8 children of Abraham (Bram) and Maria Segboer and raised on the family farm just north of Fort Macleod. She attended Howe School and later Granum High School. She worked at Clifton Williams Clothing Store prior to marrying Ernest Abramenko and giving birth to 3 sons, Robert (Heather), Perry (Phyllis) and James. A homemaker during their early years she started work part-time at Sears before taking on a full-time job at the Fort Macleod Dental Clinic, and later the Fort Museum.
She was an avid gardener, enjoyed sewing and knitting and was a wonderful cook. Daily walks were a mainstay of her life. Bette was a member of the United Church Choir for over 55 years, the Welcome Matt Choir for 30 years, an active participant of the Sew Sew Club, the United Church Evening Group, and Allied Arts. Bette also donated her time as a door-to-door canvasser for the Cancer Society and the Heart Association.
Over the years her family expanded to include 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her 7 brothers, her parents, Ernest Abramenko and her good friend Bob Williams-Freeman.
A Celebration of Bette’s life will be held this summer.
