Eric Schmidt of Coaldale, passed away on January 2, 2023, at the age of 80 years after a 9-month battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Eileen of 29 years, a brother Wayne (Jean) of Coppersands SK, and Bryan of Rosthern SK. Stepchildren Pamela Materi, Robert Materi (Angel) and Alvin Materi (Cathy). grandchildren: Amber Berscht, Madison Materi, Lucy Materi, William Materi, and great- granddaughter Jenna.
After his retirement in 2006 and the move to Coaldale, he took up golfing, riding his bike, and tried his hand at woodworking. He was always looking for something new to make. He was also a good bowler, winning many trophies from the 15 years at Holiday Bowl in Lethbridge.
We loved travelling, cruising to Bermuda and Alaska, holidaying in Hawaii and British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and New Brunswick, always looking for museums to browse through. He was able to get to New Zealand twice.
The last 6 years he had a cat named Lilly that he spent hours playing with. She was his entertainment most evenings.
Eric had lived in Coaldale in 1953/54 when he moved here with his family. His father Clarence was a carpenter and helped build a couple of buildings in town.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Eric at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the Central Church of Christ, Lethbridge, Alberta.
Flowers are greatly declined, but donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Eric's name are appreciated.
