Herbert Emmott

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, Herb.

   Herbert Edwin Emmott was born in Manville, AB to Arthur and Eva Emmott on September 30, 1925. He passed away at the Pioneer Lodge in Fort Macleod on April 26, 2021 at the age of 95.

   Herb grew up on the family farm near Manville and took all of his schooling in that area. He made and kept many life-long friends from the district, fondly known as “Little Herbie Emmott”. One of Herb’s first jobs was working in a camp near Wetaskiwin, AB. He later became a Snap-On Tool Salesman based out of Calgary. In hopes to meet the ladies, he took Old Time/Ballroom dance lessons. Herb met his dark-haired beauty, Marg, who waitressed at one of the diners he frequented. They were married in June of 1953 and migrated to Fort Macleod. Soon after, Herb began work at the Ford Garage and became a skilled, Licensed Automotive Mechanic. He later Acquired his Welding Ticket and the remainder of his working years were spent at the Department of Highways Repair Shop for the Government of Alberta. He had many opportunities to show off his excellent skills and talents, including inventing equipment 

   Herb became an active part of the community which included the Board of Directors for the Credit Union, Treasurer for the Old Time Dance Club, member of the Fort Macleod Fish and Game Association, Seniors Welcome Mat, Royal Canadian Legion, Royal Order of Odd Fellows, and the Willow Valley Trophy Club.

   Dancing remained a huge part of Herb and Marg’s life which was passed on to his kids and even taught to the grandkids. He had a special trick of having the ability to push a piece of paper through the kitchen table. Once any child was old enough to figure this out, they never saw it again and he never revealed his secret. Big game hunting was another enjoyment for Herb who did a yearly, weeklong trip with his nephew Wayne and friend from Edmonton, as well as with his brother-in-law Lawrence on numerous occasions. He also passed this desire on to his two sons. Herb enjoyed playing pool but more so had a great love for playing crib, and especially winning. He enjoyed many a crib game with his very dear friend, Gordon Elgin. He also took great pride in his hobby farm taking care of his cattle and hogs. 

   Herb adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to be in their company, teaching them how to dance and play cards or giving them a bowl of sugar to dip their rhubarb. He always had a smile on his face while holding the babies. They in turn, loved hanging out with grandpa. Alex talked about all the fun times and spent many a day playing cards with great-grandpa. Herb was able to hold his newest great-granddaughter only once. He praised his granddaughter for being a great mom and doing a fine job raising her children.       

   The last few years until his passing, Herb resided at the Pioneer Lodge and spoke highly of all of the staff and the care that he received. He especially loved playing cards and Bingo with fellow residents. He regularly announced “Chow Time” at the lobby on his way for meals. Herb had many close friends during his lifetime and was always at the ready to lend a hand.

   Herb leaves to mourn his sons Rex and Warren, daughter Sherrill (Kevin) Conner, grandchildren Leanne Conner (Zane Shaw), Elyse (Jesse) Three Persons, Chad (Henriette) Conner, great-grandchildren Alex, Kaylin, Carter and Kamryn Three Persons, sister Florence Lockey, brother-in-law Lawrence (Sheila) Anderson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marg in 2019, his parents Arthur and Eva, sisters Dorothy (and husband Mel Ralston), Mildred (and husband Norman Foster), brother Art (and wife Olive Emmott), brother-in-law Jim Lockey, mother and father-in-law Walter and Dorothy Anderson, brother-in-law Clarence Anderson, two nieces, and one great-nephew.
