John Chief Moon Obituary

John Errol Chief Moon (Wolf Child), beloved husband of Delia Chief Moon (Day Chief), passed away surrounded by his family on October 28, 2025, in Lethbridge, Alberta, at the age of 62.

John was born on November 29, 1962, in Cardston, Alberta to Evangeline Chief Moon and Patrick Cross Child. He was raised Levern and attended Levern Elementary School, Fort Macleod High School, and later St. Mary’s (Kainai) High School, graduating with the Class of 1981.

From a young age, John was known for his humor, his stubbornness, and his ability to make people feel welcomed — often just by his presence. He grew up in a Catholic home, and throughout his life he learned how to walk in both spiritual worlds. Later, as his son Bryce embraced traditional ceremony, John followed. He began attending sweats, supporting ceremonies, and taking the traditional path seriously. John eventually became a member of the Brave Dog Society. He believed that healing was not a one-time thing — it was a way of living, and he did his best to live by that.

John met the love of his life, Delia, in 1981. They welcomed their daughter Kasey in 1983 — and Kasey will gladly tell anyone who will listen that she was always the favorite. John and Delia were married in 1986 and later welcomed their son Bryce. If John had a soft spot, it was his children and grandchildren. He always said he had to bust his ass to make sure his family never had to experience the hardships he grew up with. He was proud of the woman and mother Kasey became, and he was incredibly proud when Bryce embraced his traditional way of life. His family was his purpose, his motivation, and his greatest joy.

John dedicated many years of his life to working with youth and families in the community, where his patience, humour, and straight-forward way of speaking made him someone young people trusted. He first worked at the group home, supporting youth who needed someone in their corner. That work took him many places — Oklahoma, San Diego, Victoria, and more — and he carried those memories proudly. John later worked in Child Protection Services, before moving to Tatsikiisaapo’p Middle School (Kainai Board of Education), and eventually returning once again to Child Protection Services. Wherever he worked, John’s dedication was always with the children — the ones he tried to help, guide, and protect.

Because of his work, Bryce used to laugh that his dad always had free passes to the swimming pools — and John never denied it, just smirked.

Outside of work, John was the man who could fix anything. Cars, fences, appliances, bikes, whatever you brought him — he had it running again. Some of his scars came from those “fixing” stories, including the one about the vehicle that somehow managed to run over him, a story that he told with that same smirk every time.

If there was a project happening, John was already halfway through it: mechanic, builder, landscaper, problem-solver, and eventually the backbone of the Big Chief Food Truck, traveling with family to powwows, rodeos, and community events. That food truck wasn’t just a business — it was a reason for the family to be together, work together, laugh together, and argue in a parking lot together. He loved every bit of that.

John’s memory will live on in the lessons he left behind: Work hard. Stand up for your family. Lead quietly. Love loudly. And make the joke before someone else does.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Delia, his daughter Kasey, his grandchildren, and the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him.

He is reunited with his son Bryce, and the family who went before him.

John is survived by his wife, Delia Chief Moon (Day Chief); adopted mother, Leona Wolf Child; his daughter, Kasey Day Chief, Courtney (Lane) Day Chief, Brandi Fox (Wife of the late Bryce Chief Moon), Kristy Bruised Head, and Babygirl Tenille Day Chief; sons, Maleek, Kix, Jovan, Koa, Brad, Daryl, Seven, Leon, and Buck; his grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; godchildren, Ashley Cross Child, Brad Day Chief, Jacy Strongman, and Onee Strongman; siblings, Karen Chief Moon, Cheila Chief Moon, Mariam (Roy) Chief Moon, Patrick Cross Child Jr., Wes Cross Child, Jay Cross Child, Sharon (Jay) Bad Eagle, Isabella Cross Child, Irma Smith, Patrick Smith, Rachel Smith, Chubbie Standing Alone, Patricia Crow Child, Candace White Quills, and Anastasia Wolf Child. He is survived as well by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and the extended Chief Moon, Day Chief, Wolf Child, Cross Child, and related families.

John was predeceased by his son, the late Bryce Day Chief – Chief Moon; granddaughter, Aaliyah Day Chief; his parents, Evangeline Chief Moon, Patrick Cross Child; his siblings; his grandparents; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and family members who welcomed him home.
