John Lawrence Rakai, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away surrounded by love on October 22, 2025. Raised in Arborg, Manitoba, he developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the simple joys of small-town life. He earned a degree from the University of Manitoba and spent many years working in Manitoba’s healthcare system before moving to Alberta to continue his career with the Horizon school district, where he was known for his warmth, reliability, and community spirit.
John had a remarkable gift for helping others, especially with home improvements and renovations. He was always ready to lend a hand with generosity, skill, and knowledge. He found peace in nature as an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper, and shared his life-long passion for sports with enthusiasm and joy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pennylynn; his son, Jeremy (Meredith); his daughter, Brooke (Tyler), brothers Jim and Ken (Cindy); sister Kathy; and several nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren — Claire, Ryan, Gotham, Ayla, and Chloe — who brought him endless pride and joy. He was predeceased by immediate family members Joseph Rakai (father), Meta Rakai (mother), and Bob Rakai (brother).
John held a deep affection for his extended family, welcoming each member with sincerity and kindness. His kindness reached well beyond his relatives, embracing friends, neighbours, and his community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A celebration of life will not be held.
