Kathy Scout-Bastien Obituary

Kathy Marie Scout-Bastien

Saatsitapiaaki – “Keeper of Children Woman”

June 21, 1970 – February 4, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kathy, of Piikani Nation, on February 4, 2026. Kathy leaves behind her loving husband, Wade Bastien; children, Joshua, Christine, and Shelby Scout-Bastien; and her beloved pets, Kitty, Bailey, Shepherd, and Papay.

Kathy was born on June 21, 1970, on Vancouver Island to her loving mother, Elizabeth “Delra” Scout. When she was just one month old, her mother brought her home to Fort Macleod, where Kathy would spend the rest of her life, building deep roots in her community, culture, and family.

In 1992, Kathy met the love of her life, Wade—quite literally next door. Their love grew into a partnership that lasted 30 years, and in 1995 they were married. Together, they raised three children, Joshua, Christine, and Shelby, creating a home filled with laughter, stories, and unwavering love.

Kathy was a lifelong teacher and keeper of Blackfoot language and ceremony, being a proud Kipiitapoka who carried her teachings with humility and strength. Raised traditionally by her grandmother, Myrtle, and guided by many mothers (Kathleen, Christine, Rosie, and Barb) and Elders, she held her cultural teachings close to her heart. She cherished her memories of being raised in ceremony, and even small things—like her special hundred-dollar cup for “Grandpa Stan”—carried deep meaning and love.

She had many passions in life. Kathy loved hockey, sports, and spending time with her family. She graduated from Old Sun College with her Veterinary Certificate and lived her faith as a devout Catholic. A true cowgirl at heart, she was strong, capable, and never afraid to get her hands dirty. She was known for building fences, fixing things, and helping anyone who needed it. Often fixing things to get out of house chores.

Kathy loved the land—fishing, berry picking, gathering mint, bird watching, and going on adventures. She was proud to be the first Indigenous woman to earn her coaching certificate, a milestone she held with great pride. She also contributed to Niitsitapii education and was referenced in the book Small Numbers, reflecting her commitment to culture, learning, and the future of her people.

Above all else, Kathy was a homemaker in the truest, most meaningful sense of the word. Her home was always open, the coffee pot always on, and her heart always ready for conversation. Her children and family knew they could come to her with anything, and her relatives and friends knew they would always be welcomed. She loved visiting, loved to laugh, and as a young girl, loved a good prank. She was a gifted storyteller, sharing wisdom, humor, and memories that kept family and culture alive.

Kathy was a protector of her family, standing strong beside her best friend, Trina Weasel Moccasin and Tracy Weasel Moccasin, and always looking out for her loved ones. Her kindness, strength, humor, and devotion to family and tradition will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Wade Bastien; children, Joshua, Christine, and Shelby Scout-Bastien; godchildren, Chayse Scout; traditional children, April, Tiffany, and Jonathan Bastien; siblings, Mike (Shyanne), Chris, Matthew (Kristy), Clint, Tracy, Annie (Kelly), Bobbi, and Suzan; mother-in-law, Barb Bastien; brother-in-law, Dennis (Kari) Callihoo; sister-in-law, Glenda Bastien; aunts and uncles, Roy (Nora) Scout, Christine (Ray) Vaivada, Kathleen McHugh, Rosie Many Grey Horses, Jo-Anne Scout, Evelyn Scout, Teresa, and Pam Wadsworth, Leonard (Audrey) Weasel Traveller, Jeanette Bastien, Alene Bastien, and Shirley Bastien; and several nieces and nephews.

Kathy is predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth “Delra” Scout; stepfather, Berry Williams; traditional mother, Myrtle (Frank) Scout; great grandma, Mary Black Water, and Maggie (Walter) Bastien; brothers, Kevin and Jason Scout; uncles, Francis, Joe, Stan, and Keevan Scout, Lucius, and Melvin Wadsworth, and John Bastien; and family friend, Steve Thibodeau.

We take comfort knowing that she will be welcomed by those who have gone before her.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Siksika Board of Education, Romeo Crow Chief, and Piikani Child & Family Service, Fort Macleod EMS and all those who have donated and supported the family. We apologize for any names we have missed.
