Margerie Shenton Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Margerie Evelyn Shenton on September 19, 2021 at the age of 86. Remaining forever in our hearts, she was a much-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Marge was predeceased by her son Jim (1981), her husband of 57 years, Cecil (2011), and her parents Clarence Raleigh Warren (1967) and Clarice Evelyn, nee Britton (1992). She was the last surviving  sibling of Stan, Keith, Buck (Melvin) and Betty.

Family was everything to her.

She is survived by her children: KC (Brenda), Pat (Sheila) and Barb (Brian); her grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeremy), Benjamin (Amy), Hailey (Jorge), Nicole (Matt), Erika (Tom) and Alex (Jessie); her great grandchildren: Shelden (Bella), Jaxon, Logan, Sasha, Brielle, Lilly, Odin, Abigail, Dante, Casey, Connor, Atlas, Raleigh and Scarlet. She was recently blessed with two great-great-grandchildren: Ilona and Milo.

Margerie was born in Fort Macleod, and attended school in the Ewelme district until Grade 6, when the family moved to Gladstone Valley (1946) where her parents operated a sawmill. She attended Grades 7 to 9 at Gladstone Valley School and Grades 10 and 11 at Pincher Creek, where she stayed at the dormitory managed by George and Alice Shenton (Cecil’s parents). After completing Grade 11 she went to work in Fort Macleod as a telephone operator.

She married the love of her life on July 18, 1953 in Pincher Creek. After working in the oil patch, Cecil and Marge settled at the Warren family property in Gladstone Valley to ranch and raise their family. They became the owners and it became The Mill Creek Ranch – their life’s work. It was during this time Marge spent many years as a school bus driver for her home route.

She had a wonderful way with animals, especially horses. She received her Western Riding Instructor certificate at the age of 51 and taught riding lessons in her home arena for 20 years. All six of her grandchildren, and many Gladstone Valley kids, were the beneficiaries of these lessons. A highlight for her was teaching therapeutic riding and working with local 4-H clubs. She developed many lifelong friendships with her students and colleagues in the riding community.

Marge was a member of the Mountain Mill United Church UCW, The Oldman Rose Society, and an active supporter of Cecil when he played with the Oldtimers Hockey Association, where many social activities were often filled with laughter. They enjoyed old-time dancing and were known to cut a rug on occasion.

She was also a loving Auntie to many nieces and nephews who were always welcomed at her door with homemade cookies and greeted by her many family pets. They were met with a big smile, and given big hugs when they showed up for branding. She was a great cook; her pies and her gravy were the talk of family gatherings around the table. She is fondly remembered for her garden and always having a cup of tea ready to welcome neighbours.

We have lost a very loving soul.

A private family service will be held, followed by interment of ashes at Fairview Cemetery, Pincher Creek.
