Mary Ozar Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Ozar, who passed away suddenly, with her family by her side, at the South Health Campus in Calgary, Alberta, on July 8, 2026, just two months shy of her 90th birthday.

Betty is survived by her children, Doug (Kathie) Ozar, Paul (Cindy) Ozar, Duncan Ozar, Loretta (Tom) Berger, and Mike (Haley) Ozar; her siblings, Joan (Don) McNamee, Paul Crawford, and Anne (Denis) Coen; her brother-in-law, Archie Craig; and her sister-in-law, Virginia Crawford. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Ozar; her parents, Archie and Kay Crawford; her sister, Helen Craig; her brother, Bill Crawford; and her daughter, Kathy VanOyen.

Betty leaves behind her grandchildren: Ryan Ozar, Dillon Ozar, Brittany (Charlie) Tapp, Renee Feist, Jay (Angie) Albert, Sheena (Darcy) Dietrich, Jennifer VanOyen, Richard (Devina) Berger, Leah (Peter) Tenove, Owen (Tobi) Ozar, and Alex Ozar. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Marcus Ozar, Rosalina Tapp, Tiadora Tapp, Trevor (MacKenzie) Feist, Megan Hall (Jeff Pisony), Taylor Feist (Jaden Moody), Dylan (Saylor) Albert, Justin (Meagan) Albert, Devin Albert, Makayla Meaney, McKenzie Meaney, Tanner Berger, Levi Berger, Henry Berger, and Natalie Tenove; and her great-great-grandchildren: Rebel Feist, Myra Albert, Jaxx Albert, and Ensley Albert.

Betty was born in Ontario and came west with her family in 1952 when she was 16 years old. She completed her schooling in Calgary. One summer, Betty's parents took her and her younger sister, Helen, to experience western culture at a dude ranch in Skookumchuck, British Columbia. There, she met her future husband, Bill, who worked at the ranch as a wrangler.

Betty and Bill were married in November 1959 and started their family soon afterward. They lived briefly in Bellevue, Alberta, before moving to the family farm in Lundbreck, Alberta, where they raised their six children. Life on the farm meant long hours and hard work. While Bill worked away from the farm, Betty managed the household, cared for the children, tended the garden, canned fruits and vegetables, helped with the cattle when needed, and still found time for knitting and crafts. She also spent many years attending sporting events across Canada and the United States in support of her children.

Betty worked as a kindergarten assistant and loved teaching children and being surrounded by their enthusiasm and energy. She was exceptionally creative and took great joy in sharing her handiwork with others. Whether she was creating afghans, photo album covers, table runners, knitted hats and socks, or completing puzzles, her hands were rarely idle.

Betty was heavily involved with the Windsor Heritage Centre in Lundbreck before moving to Pincher Creek in 2015. She loved her home in town on a quiet street and especially enjoyed her fireplace and beautiful backyard. In 2021, she moved to Whispering Winds Village, an independent and assisted-living community in Pincher Creek. There, she enjoyed spending time with both new and longtime friends and participating in the many activities offered, especially Bingo.

Betty enjoyed a full and meaningful life and touched the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation or STARS.
