Mike Heric Obituary

Mike passed peacefully away on January 9, 2026 at the age of 79

He leaves behind his wife Louise, three sons Derek (Tam), Brad (Deb), Bryan (Sarah) and grandchildren Quinn, Jaxon, Trin, Mateo, Rylan and Reese.

Mike was first and foremost a family man, who lived, worked and loved for all his family, friends and community. He was always willing to share his knowledge to help others and forge relationships that lasted a lifetime.

Mike was born in Creston, BC, where he met his wife of 58 years, Louise, when they were both teens. His drive to excel at sports led him into basketball, lifeguarding, baseball, volleyball and hockey. Mike was also presented a medal from the Governor General of Canada for setting records in shot put and discus.

Mike worked at many jobs initially in his home province and was employed by the City of Nelson as a surveyor before moving to Alberta (in a blizzard) to start a cow/calf operation in the Porcupine Hills.

Mike’s list of contributions to the people of Fort Macleod is long. From coaching minor hockey and baseball to building many homes in town and roping arenas around Southern Alberta. Some of Mike’s most impressive work was restoring the NWMP Barracks and renovating the Elk’s Hall.

Mike was a Rotarian, Volunteer Firefighter, Ambulance Driver and a member of the Agricultural Society.

Perhaps Mike’s most memorable creations were the “treasure chests” he lovingly crafted for all his six grandchildren. Bumpa, as he was known to his grandkids, was passionate about woodworking, being a skilled craftsman in his own right. He would often spend hours/days in his woodworking shop creating gorgeous pieces for family or friends.

Mike’s personal passions were focused on the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, “jeeping” and horses. Mike spent much time in the wilds admiring the landscape and teaching his three sons about nature. It is said Mike could tell the species of any tree just by looking at its bark.

Mike’s lifelong obsession with hockey and sports led him to be Minor Hockey President and a coach for many in town. He also enjoyed playing hockey as part of the Fort Macleod Old Porkies hockey Club and slow pitch for many years.

In more recent times Mike restored a 1929 Ford Model A Coupe and became active in car shows throughout the area with the Fort Macleod Checkmates Car Club.

Mike will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. Always quick with a joke or “Mikeism,” he entertained his grandchildren endlessly with a warm smile.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Fort Macleod Handi-Bus Society.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
