Robert 'Robb' Sulava Obituary

It is with extreme sadness that the family of Robert Victor Sulava announces his sudden passing on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Robb was predeceased by his mom and dad, Elmire and Victor Sulava; his sisters Patricia Allred, Rhonda Harrison and Angela Sulava; his brothers-in-law Brent Gunderson and Gordon Allred, his sister-in-law Marg Soderstrom, niece Taralyn Layton and great-niece Katelyn Hay.

Robb was the youngest in the family, born on September 27th, 1962.  His brother George (the oldest) was very happy there was another boy in the family, so he didn’t have to contend with 8 sisters who were all his second mothers. Robb and Debbie shared a special bond. They had each other’s backs and she helped him with his care due to a medical issue that left him in a wheelchair. If there was an issue with something, their motto was “we’ll figure it out, we always do.”

Robb loved his sports. He played hockey, basketball, volleyball, golf, and baseball. He always gave everything he had for the teams and ended up coaching his sisters’ slow pitch team.  He received his degree in Education from the University of Calgary which took him to Wabasca to teach.  While there, he started coaching school sports from his wheelchair. He was always there for the students and they for him.  When he ended up in his wheelchair, he took his disability in stride.  He never complained.  He was a very gentle, kind, compassionate person, even with all his challenges.

Robb was a Montreal Canadiens fan from a very young age.  He never wavered and was with them through thick and thin.  He also loved the Calgary Stampeders and the Blue Jays.  He loved discussing the games and had a lot of knowledge about the status of the teams.  His favourite player was Guy Lafleur and he got an autographed picture from him.

Robb loved his family.  We had many barbecues and get togethers that he cherished. It was always a lot of stories of growing up and experiences we each had.  When Robb laughed it came right from his toes.  He will be deeply missed by his family and best friend Shane Cunningham.

Robb is survived by his brother George (Sheran); his sisters Helen (Jack) Burke, Donna Westley; brother-in-law, Brian Harrison; and special sister Debbie Sulava, Lorna (Tom) Weekes, and Winnie Gunderson.

He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Leah (Frank) Sciarra, Lyle (Tammy) Burke, Darren (Joanne) Burke, Jaime (Jared) Armstrong, Lorne (Jill) Harrison, Sharon Harrison, Jennifer Weekes, Michael Weekes, Shannon Westley and many great-nieces and nephews.
