Mrs. Umbelina De Azevedo, beloved wife of the Late Mr. Francisco De Azevedo, passed away in Lethbridge, Alberta, on April 11, 2025 at the age of 87 years.
Umbelina was born on the Azorean island of Faial, Portugal. She had two brothers, Jose, Eduardo and two sisters, Maria and Palmira. She married Francisco October 22, 1956 when she was 19 and Frank was 32 then lived with and took care of her in-laws for three years. There was a volcano on the island and the ash covered the farm land so Frank and Umbelina applied to come to Canada arriving here in July 1959. Her son Tony was born in on November 17, 1959, as Umbelina says “He was a beautiful baby, those were happy days in my life.”
Frank and Umbelina loved Canada and were always thankful to be able to come here to live. They worked hard, built a home and enjoyed their garden. Their grandsons Nathan (Chantel) and Troy (Jerrie) brought love and joy into their lives and there was lots of laughter when together as family.
After Frank passed away Umbelina continued living in their Coaldale condo until she was no longer able to cope alone, she then relocated Lethbridge closer to Tony and Allana. Tony as a loving son always made sure Umbelina had whatever she required, visiting her regularly stocking up her required items, “fixing up things the way she wanted them” and making sure she was well cared for.
She liked her one bedroom “condo” at the Legacy Lodge where the staff took very good care of her and enjoyed her cheeky, cheerful personality. Umbelina had a deep personal relationship with Jesus through her Catholic faith, reading her bible comforted her and she often expressed her thankfulness for all the blessings in her life and for the love of her family.
A Funeral Mass was held at on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Coaldale, Alberta. A Graveside Service followed at the Coaldale Community Cemetery.
