Victor Akitt

Victor Richard Akitt of Pincher Creek, beloved husband of Maureen Akitt, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2022 at the age of 80 years.

Victor was born on December 5, 1941 in Pincher Creek to William (Bill) and Katie Akitt.

Victor spent the majority of his childhood years with his four siblings living and working on the Shoderee Ranch, which his father managed. He took a brief break from the ranch to experience “city life” in Lethbridge, where he went on a blind date to meet his wife of 58 years.

The land called to Victor though, and he returned to the Shoderee to raise his own family for 28 years. When he was not busy calving, branding, farming, or clearing the 3-mile driveway, he was with his kids building forts, fishing in the nearby rivers, shooting gophers, and riding horses, or square dancing with his wife in Twin Butte.    

After leaving the ranch in 1991, he hung up his cowboy boots for loafers, and spent the next 20 years working with his friends in Waterton Park as the manager of the Aspen Village Inn and then in the Waterton Lakes Golf Course Pro shop until his retirement.

Victor was the heartwood of the family, the kind of tree that apples do not fall far from on purpose. His presence carried a sense of refuge and depth. He had a soft-spoken nature, and everyone stopped to listen to him speak ---- which was usually to tell a joke (do not take any wooden nickels). He was an incredible woodworker (lumber turned to furniture in his hands). Outside of his shop, Victor loved to golf, curl, watch Flames games and Yellowstone, and camp, all with his family and friends by his side.

Victor will be lovingly remembered by his wife Maureen; daughter Laura (Lesley); son Warren; grandchildren Kendra and Nolan; brothers Ken (Sherry) and Dale (Shirley); sisters Agnes Bowersock (Blaine) and Pat Warmink, as well as numerous nieces/nephews and their families.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday March 26, 2022 at Pincher Creek United Church, 972 Police Avenue, with Rev. Hyun Heo officiating.
