Monica Wright Obituary

With deep love and gratitude, the family of Monica G. Wright celebrates her life following her passing on May 14, 2026, in Pincher Creek, Alberta. Monica was born Monica Gunhild Boytinck on July 26, 1939, in Friesoythe, Germany, part of the former Duchy of Oldenburg.

She was the daughter of Joseph Hermann Boytinck, land developer and businessman, and Maria Theodora Boytinck (Rohe), a milliner who operated a fashion business. Monica emigrated to Canada in 1948, as her family embraced a new beginning after the difficult years of war in Europe. She spent her teenage years in Fairview, Alberta, where the foundations of her strong work ethic and enduring values were shaped.

Monica was the heart of her family—a devoted and loving wife to her husband Bill, with whom she shared an enduring partnership. They were married in 1958 and soon began building their family together. A caring mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and a remarkable partner in life and business, she leaves a legacy of strength, generosity, and quiet determination.

As a homemaker, Monica created a warm and welcoming home while raising her four children—Bruce, Brian, Carolynne, and Geoffrey—with unwavering dedication. She guided them through school, homework, sports, and countless extra-curricular activities including basketball, volleyball, hockey, figure skating, swimming, dance, piano, music, and band lessons. Whether organizing busy schedules, driving carloads of children to practices and games, or volunteering her time at events and tournaments, she kept family life running smoothly. From daily meals and endless laundry to encouragement, discipline, and unconditional love, her care was constant and deeply felt.

In 1963, Monica worked alongside her husband to build and sustain a small independent retail department store, Boytinck’s Department Store, bearing her family name and benefiting from her steady and capable partnership. In the 1980s, she founded Ruffles, a ladies’ boutique inspired by her desire to help women—especially those re-entering the workforce—feel confident and comfortable. She took great joy in helping others choose outfits for new beginnings and special occasions. Early on in this venture, she was joined by her dear lifelong friend Joanne Heaton, with whom she shared many meaningful experiences, plenty of laughter and shared joy.

Monica was also deeply engaged in her community. As a dedicated volunteer and Rotary member, she gave generously of her time and energy alongside her good friend Anna Eggert and fellow Rotarians. She had a passion for gardening and took pride in beautifying Pincher Creek; a place she affectionately called her “Foothills Oasis.”

Creative and resourceful, Monica loved to bake, cook, sew, and quilt, always finding ways to create something meaningful. Her artistic spirit extended beyond her hands-on crafts to a deep appreciation for the arts; she found great joy in leisurely strolls through art galleries across the continent, where she drew inspiration from the works of others. Equally at home at her own easel, she enjoyed working with acrylics, as a form of self-expression and discovery. Whether admiring masterpieces or creating her own, Monica embraced art as both a passion and a peaceful refuge for learning and creativity.

Known for her bright smile and warm nature, Monica made everyone feel welcome with a kind word and easy conversation.

Monica will be lovingly remembered by her children Bruce (Donna), Brian (Cindy), and Geoffrey (Linda), and by the memory of her daughter Carolynne (Ivan), who remained a cherished part of her family. She will also be remembered by her brother Manfred (Doris) and her brother-in-law Robert (Marilyn).

She was a proud and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by her nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many friends.

Predeceased by her beloved husband Bill, her daughter Carolynne, and her brother Paul, Monica is now at peace with them.

Though she often worked behind the scenes, her impact was immeasurable. Her legacy lives on in the family she raised, the community she enriched, and the many lives she touched.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Monica may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the Windy Slopes Health Foundation in support of the local hospital, in gratitude for the kindness and care she received in her final days.
